Cambodia, officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a Southeast Asian country bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. With a population of over 16 million, Cambodia is the 69th most populous country in the world. The country is known for its rich history, ancient temples, and stunning natural beauty.

Cambodia's history dates back to the 1st century AD, when the Funan Kingdom was established. The Funan Kingdom was followed by the Chenla Kingdom and then the Angkor Empire, which flourished from the 9th to the 15th centuries. During the Angkor period, Cambodia was one of the most powerful empires in Southeast Asia, and its influence extended as far as present-day Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.

Cambodia's golden age came to an end in the 15th century, when the Angkor Empire collapsed. The country was subsequently divided into a number of smaller kingdoms, which were often at war with each other. In the 19th century, Cambodia became a French protectorate, and it remained under French rule until 1953, when it gained independence.

Since independence, Cambodia has experienced a period of political instability and conflict, including the Cambodian-Vietnamese War and the Khmer Rouge regime. The Khmer Rouge was a communist regime that ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, and its policies resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people.

In 1979, the Vietnamese army invaded Cambodia and toppled the Khmer Rouge regime. The Vietnamese remained in Cambodia until 1989, and they installed a pro-Vietnamese government. In 1991, Cambodia signed a peace agreement that ended the Cambodian-Vietnamese War, and the country has been ruled by a democratically elected government since 1993.

Today, Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy, with King Norodom Sihamoni as head of state and Prime Minister Hun Sen as head of government. The country has a vibrant economy, and it is a popular tourist destination. Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, is Cambodia's most popular tourist attraction.
