About Time and Time Zone

The Earth rotates from west to east, and the sun is seen earlier in the east than in the west. The difference between the Eastern Time and the Western Time not only needs to be calculated in hours, but also in minutes and seconds, which brings inconvenience to people.

In order to overcome the confusion of time, the International Longitude Conference (also known as the International Meridian Conference) held in Washington in 1884 stipulated the division of the world into 24 time zones. They are in the middle time zone (zero time zone), east 1-12 zones, and west 1-12 zones. Each time zone spans 15 degrees longitude, and the time is exactly 1 hour. The final 12 districts, east and west, each span a longitude of 7.5 degrees, with a boundary of 180 degrees east and west longitude. The time on the central meridian of each time zone is the time uniformly used within that time zone, known as zone time. The time difference between adjacent time zones is 1 hour. For example, the time in Zone 8 of East China is always 1 hour faster than that in Zone 7 of East Thailand, and 1 hour slower than that in Zone 9 of East Japan. Therefore, people traveling abroad must adjust their watches at any time to keep up with local time. Whenever heading west, after passing a time zone, turn the watch forward by one hour (for example, from 2:00 to 1:00); Whenever heading east, after passing a time zone, turn the watch back one hour (for example, from 1:00 to 2:00).

In fact, many countries and regions around the world do not strictly calculate time based on time zones. In order to adopt the unified time throughout the country, a time zone is generally used as the time adopted by the national unified time. For example, China takes the time of the East 8th District, where the capital city of Beijing is located, as the time of national unity, known as Beijing time. For example, countries such as the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, although located in the central time zone, use the time of East Zone 1 in order to be consistent with most European countries.
